Modular Typeface

Handgloves

Fall 2016

Created a modular typeface by first designing the letters 'Handgloves' on a grid of uniformly sized squares. After those 9 letters, we were tasked with designing an ampersand, followed by the rest of the lowercase alphabet. This exercise was performed for S351 Typography, and draws insipration from early 20th-century avant-garde designers who made experimental typefaces using simple geometric parts. The project also speaks to the structure of digital technologies, from cash register receipts and led signs to on-screen font displays, showing that a typeface is a system of related formal elements.
